What is minimally invasive surgery?
Minimally invasive procedures include laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. These techniques use state-of-the-art technology to reduce the amount of tissue scarring when performing surgery by using small 1/4 to 1/2 inch incisions through which small video cameras and operating instruments are inserted. The surgical team can view the internal organs through the miniature camera, allowing the surgeon to perform the surgical procedure without having to make a big abdominal incision.
Potential benefits of minimally invasive procedures
These procedures provide results that are as effective as traditional surgery, but may provide the following benefits:
- Less major bleeding
- Fewer post op infections
- Fewer complications
- Shorter length of stay
- Quicker return to normal activity
- Quicker return to work
- Less scarring
- Comparable or lower cost
